The Alumni Series features testimonials and interviews given by recent graduates of WillowWood School. In this post, Evelyn discusses how her time at WillowWood School helped her develop the confidence, socioemotional skills, and study habits that are now helping her succeed at the University of Ottawa.
How did WillowWood help you achieve your goals?
WillowWood gave me a safe and supportive space to grow, both academically and personally. The small class sizes allowed for more one-on-one time with teachers, which helped me build confidence in subjects I used to struggle with. I was encouraged to pursue my interests and push myself, which really helped me stay motivated and focused on my goals.
Did you make friends with students at WillowWood?
Yes! One of the best parts of WillowWood was the sense of community. Because the classes are smaller, it was easier to connect with people and form real friendships. I made some great friends that I still keep in touch with today
How did the teachers help you academically during your time at WillowWood?
The teachers were incredibly patient and understanding. They took the time to explain things in a way that made sense to me and were always available for extra help if I needed it. They genuinely cared about how I was doing and helped me improve my writing, math skills, and critical thinking
Describe a memorable moment at WillowWood.
One of my most memorable moments was Spirit Week. Everyone got involved from crazy costume days to fun competitions, and it really brought the school together. It was a time when I felt completely accepted and like I could just be myself.
Describe a time when WillowWood teachers or staff were there for you or helped you emotionally.
There was a time when I was overwhelmed with school and personal stuff, and one of my teachers noticed. She took the time to talk to me privately, listened without judgment, and helped me find a way to manage everything. That moment reminded me how much the staff truly cares about the students beyond just academics.
Anything else you would want parents to know about WillowWood?
WillowWood isn’t just a school, it’s a community. The environment is warm, inclusive, and supportive, and every student is treated as an individual. If you’re looking for a place where your child can grow at their own pace and feel genuinely supported, this is it.
What school are you going to now? What are you studying there?
I'm currently at the University of Ottawa, going into my third year of Honours BA Psychology. Alongside my studies, I’ve been actively volunteering in the community, which has been very rewarding. Recently, I was accepted to present a poster at a conference hosted by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), which was an incredible opportunity to share my research and connect with professionals in the field. Balancing academics, volunteering, and conference participation has made my university experience very fulfilling, and looking forward to my future in this field.
